Westlink Career Institutes EMT Basic training is for approximately 12-16 weeks for Day and 20 weeks for evening. The EMT Basic (EMT-B) training requires 240 Hours for course completion. Day classes are (Monday thru Friday 9:00 am -5:00 pm), and the evening classes are (Monday – Friday 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm). The national mandates for the course require that students become skilled in cognition (lecture), psycho-motor (hands on) skills, as well as their affect (emotional behavior). The course is fast paced and rigorous as it encompasses 40 Chapters of textbook material, on-line studies, psycho-motor skills all within 12-16 weeks. The training course involves classroom lectures and homework assignments (text book, on-line adaptive learning, assessment in action, writing projects, etc). Emotional development is equally as important as the lecture and the hands on component because it assesses the student’s behavioral dispositions and navigates them towards more professional responses.
Westlink Career Institute Advanced Level EMT (AEMT) training requires 300 Hours for course completion. Day classes are (Tuesday thru Friday 9:00 am -3:00 pm), and the Evening classes are (Monday – Friday 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm). AEMT's function as part of a holistic EMS response and operates under medical oversight. They perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The major difference between the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and the Emergency Medical Technician is the ability to perform limited advanced skills and provide pharmacological interventions to emergency patients.
The EKG/Phlebotomy course is a component of the Allied Health Training and runs for approximately 12 Weeks (240 Hours) and consists of two concurrent phases: didactic(classroom) and clinical (in hospital or clinic).
For the didactic phase, Day Classes meet Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, and Evening Classes meet on Monday thru Friday 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Through lecture, multi-media and on-line interactive experiences participants will gain the skills necessary to perform EKG's or "Electrocardiography", or the process of recording the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time using electrodes placed on a patient's body. The student will also learn to administer blood draws or “venipuncture” for patients. Students will then be placed in clinical's where they can gain experience in a supervised setting.
The clinical phase begins during the third week of the didactic phase of the course. Students will be assigned to a clinical site. The available shifts will be announced but generally include day, evening, and weekends shifts. In the clinical phase, students are rotated through hospitals and affiliated community clinics. Students function on a one-to-one basis, performing EKG's, and drawing blood from actual patients, under the direct supervision of a laboratory supervisor and/or licensed EKG/Phlebotomist preceptor. This course will be offered at the main location or satellite location as announced.
